The other day, this little boy who couldn’t have been older than seven walked up to me and handed me a note. I thanked him and he walked away. By the time I read it, he was gone. I’ve been carrying it around with me ever since. I don’t fully know what it means. I do know that I feel encouraged by it.
What is sticking with me is how impressed I am that a little boy would write a note of encouragement and go give it to a total stranger. It was such a great reminder to me that I need to be remembering to teach my kids that how they treat adults affects them. For a while now, I’ve been working on the idea of “must show respect to elders,” but it didn’t dawn on me to talk about encouragement for adults. Why not? Compliments to teachers and friends’ parents, servers in restaurants, firefighters . . . so many opportunities. I’m kind of pumped to get working on this. Wouldn’t it be amazing if all of our children were wandering around filling the buckets of the adults in their lives? Kudos to the mom of my little note-writer. He totally encouraged me, and I’m thankful!
